Playing popular strategy game Starcraft 2 using an iPhone or even an iPad sounds like a usability nightmare, but developer Daniel Hellerman is planning to make it happen regardless of the potential issues.

Hellerman is working on an iOS application called the Starcraft 2 Gameboard that will let you fully control Starcraft 2 from your iPhone or iPad, complete with 'mini-map control, detailed unit statistics, and easy touch access to the game's most important hotkeys and macros,' he claims.

High quality Starcraft 2 inspired iPad cases & skins by independent artists and designers from around the world. Redbubble brings you unique and colorful iPad cases & skins. With custom cuts and independent designs, deck out your iPad in style. All orders are custom.

Blizzard, the company that develops the popular Starcraft game franchise, is known for promptly shutting down third-party projects related to its games that don't follow its terms of service to the letter. The future of the Starcraft 2 Gameboard therefore seems uncertain.

However, the FAQ section of the application's website claims that the system 'does not modify essential Starcraft 2 functions' and that the device works 'almost as another keyboard, therefore it is completely compatible with Starcraft 2.' Furthermore, the site claims the application is 'not a hack' and 'does not modify any game files whatsoever.'

  1. UPDATE 2011.06.24: evaluating two new keyboards that arrived. One has a 'fatal flaw' and another looks like a strong contender for top value SC2 gaming keyboard! Results should be posted.
  2. The Starcraft 2 Gameboard is set for release in September 2010. With the Starcraft 2 Gameboard, you will be able to remotely control your Starcraft 2 game from your iPhone, Ipad, or Ipod touch.

The app should become available in September. What do you think: Will it be possible to play Starcraft 2 from your iPhone or iPad? Could such an application be useful or is it just a gimmick?

Don't get too excited by that headline – Blizzard hasn't suddenly sprung an iOS version of Starcraft 2 on us without warning.

Instead, developer Daniel Hellerman has been working on a way of alleviating the pain of learning all the hotkeys and shortcuts through a new ‘Gameboard' app due to hit the App Store next month.

If you've played an RTS online before, or seen one of those freaky videos of a South Korean pro gamer seemingly having a fit on the keyboard, you'll understand the need for getting these shortcuts memorised – they can be the difference between success and miserable failure.

The Starcraft 2 Gameboard syncs up to the game over USB or wi-fi and transforms either an iPhone or iPad into a second keyboard for the game: a keyboard that can be altered and changed, rather than just another emotionless QWERTY display.

The developer is keen to point out on his website that there are no hacks or modifications to ‘essential Starcraft 2 functions' made by the program, so it shouldn't suddenly kick you off Battle.net should you use it.

Best wait a week after release before checking it, though, as it does require another program to be installed on the PC to work, which always hoists the suspicion flag in my mind.
